As a manager it is vital to have the skills, knowledge and confidence to recruit and select the best person for the job, using a fair and consistent approach. It is also important to brush up on your skills if you haven't needed to recruit for a while.

These sessions aim to:

  • equip you with the knowledge needed to understand the importance of a structured recruitment and selection process, working in line with our vision, values and behaviours and appropriate policies and procedures, while meeting legislative requirements and the Equality Act

We provide role specific training to employees where required, for example health and safety training needed for staff to be able to work safely.

If your team needs specific training as part of their role, we can work with you to find a suitable solution. If we are unable to provide something in-house, then we can help you to locate and commission a learning solution from an external provider. We can also manage your bookings through the central course booking system and provide you with customised data and reports to monitor your team's training.

There are 8 units of mandatory training that must be completed by the relevant staff and the majority refreshed on a regular basis. These are all available as online eLearning courses. The units required for all employees are also available in printed or video form so that those without network access can complete them. Speak to your line manager for the printed or video versions.

How will I know when I need to do mandatory training?

The refresher process for mandatory training is automatic. There is no need to enrol on courses, unless you need to complete them outside the usual schedule, as you will be notified when a refresher is required and provided with all the information needed to access and complete the training.

What happens if I forget to do it?

It is important that mandatory training is completed in a timely manner. If you don't comply with a mandatory training request you will first receive a reminder before your manager is informed that the training has not been completed.

What if I need to do a mandatory training session before I get the reminder?
If you are required to complete one of the mandatory training units outside of your usual refresh schedule:

Apprenticeship qualifications

If you want to further your Continued Professional Development (CPD) and gain a new qualification, then an apprenticeship qualification could be the ideal route for you.

Who can do an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are open to all employees at the council, not just new starters, and there is a diverse range of standards and levels to choose from. Whatever your role is, there's likely to be something to suit you.

Please note: if you are in a temporary post, your contract must be long enough to cover the length of time you'll take to achieve your qualification.
