Description

A new walking football session – arranged in partnership between the council's sports and play service, Driffield EI AFC and East Riding Leisure Driffield – will take place from October.

The sessions will run every Thursday for 10 weeks, starting from Thursday, 10 October between 7.30-8.30pm at East Riding Leisure Driffield on Bridlington Road, Driffield.

The first session, on Thursday, 10 October will be free of charge and then £2.50 thereafter, with sessions targeted for people over 50.

Walking football provides fun, sociable football games and skills, aiming to improve fitness for those who have perhaps previously played and would like a chance to kick a ball again.

Dave Lawson, from Driffield EI AFC, said: “Not only is it an excellent way of staying fit, but it also offers a multitude of health benefits for older people, such as reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and strokes, while improving blood pressure.

“It provides positive changes in postural balance; blood pressure and resting heart rate; lowered cholesterol; improved blood sugar levels; and bone density and improving reactions. It also reduces the odds of suffering from type 2 diabetes – all indicators of general good health.”

Dom Rhodes, health and wellbeing coordinator, added: “There are also many psychological and mental health advantages to playing walking football, namely: high levels of personal reward and satisfaction with reduced levels of stress and exertion while playing, despite working physically hard.”

The sessions will be led by Dom, from the council’s sport and play service, and Dave Lawson, who will provide casual, organised walking football games.

They will accommodate various fitness levels, providing low- to mid-intensity matches ideal for people who haven’t played for a long time, or would just like to get fitter and meet new people.

Walking football – no matter the skill or fitness level – is strongly recommended, with the session initially taking place in the sports hall, so suitable trainers and indoor clothing are required.
