Preparations underway for next month's General Election
Thu, 07 Nov 2019

Preparations are well underway following the announcement of a snap general election on Thursday, 12 December including the arrangements for staffing polling stations and count centres.

In the East Riding, five constituencies will be contested – East Yorkshire; Beverley and Holderness as well as Haltemprice and Howden which will be administered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Brigg and Goole will be administered by North Lincolnshire Council whilst the Hull West and Hessle seat will be administered by Hull City Council.

The counts in the East Riding will take place after the polling stations close at 10pm and will be held at East Riding Leisure Driffield, East Riding Leisure Beverley and East Riding Leisure Haltemprice.

This will be the third election administered by the council this year and the first time since 1923 that a general election has been held in December.

Caroline Lacey, returning officer, said: “As there has been so much speculation about an election, a lot of preparation has been going on behind the scenes for a number of weeks.

“However, elections cannot run without the hard work of democratic services and the support of staff across the council including all those who take on polling station duties and help at the count centres overnight.”
