Three senior leaders take part in Common Purpose Meridian programme

Three senior leaders at the council, Andy Kingdom, Alice Beckwith and Caroline Heath, have taken part in the Common Purpose Meridian programme.

As part of the council's new East Riding Leadership Programme, a three-year partnership has been entered into with Common Purpose as part of the council’s commitment to develop its leaders and help meet the challenges ahead. The partnership allows the council to access Common Purpose's Meridian programme aimed at senior, established leaders and to the Streetwise programme aimed at leaders at all levels.

Meridian brings together established leaders from a diverse range of organisations and gives them the skills, networks and inspiration to lead beyond their authority, making an impact in their organisation and the wider region.

The programme is different in that it is not classroom based and participants have an opportunity to meet a diverse range of peers and explore leading in different contexts, discussing real issues and topics and tackling complex change beyond your day to day role and leadership mandate. Its aim is to develop leaders who can lead innovative and resilient teams, make better decisions and accelerate complex change.

Caroline Heath, human resources manager, said: “The programme was a great opportunity to share experiences and hear what other participants are doing in their organisations. The diversity in the wider group helped me to see how different experiences and perspectives can change the shape of a problem and find new solutions and approaches to leadership challenges.”

The programme consists of three intense core days where participants explore leadership beyond authority, collaboration and leading change and consist of three half-day visits and three half-day learning groups.

The three half-day visits were to a charity, a global manufacturing company and a prison. Each visit had a real-life complex leadership challenge for participants to explore.

The three half-day learning groups were made up of four to six participants who all had an opportunity to share their own leadership challenges and work with real-life issues that are directly relevant to them and receive feedback from others in the group. These learning groups are a great chance to share experiences.

Andy Kingdom, head of public health, said: "I was particularly impressed with the honesty of the people who spoke to us on the course. It was a fantastic insight into the differing ways leaders maintain personal resilience when faced with incredibly hard problems. I now have some really inspiring examples to help me with my challenges."

Alice Beckwith, strategic lead – business management, commissioning and change, said: “After taking part in various leadership courses over the years, I found the approach by Common Purpose both refreshing and exciting. It opened my eyes to a different style of collaborative working and I have made lots of great contacts across the region who I will definitely keep in touch with to help solve those big problems we face in Local Government.”
