Didi Conn is The One That Brid Wants as Grease Legend Stars in Panto
Tue, 10 Dec 2019

Hollywood legend Didi Conn – who played Frenchy in ‘Grease’, and recently stole the show on ITV’s Dancing on Ice’, will be starring as The Fairy Godmother in this year’s pantomime at Bridlington Spa, ‘Cinderella’.

‘The Grapevine’ caught up with Didi, who told us that this role is a ‘dream come true’. She is really looking forward to donning the gown and tiara, and can’t wait to get started. “This will be a wonderful new experience for me, and I am so excited to play this role in a British pantomime”, she said.

She promises that the pantomime will include what she describes as ‘elements of Grease’, and will be very funny. “Audiences come to a pantomime expecting so much fun, and that’s what we will give them.”

Didi has never been to Yorkshire before, and is keen to try the local fare like Yorkshire pudding for the very first time. She is looking forward to spending the festive season on the Yorkshire coast. “I would love to do more work in the UK, because I love coming here, and always have a great time.”

2019 has seen what she calls a ‘new chapter’ in her career, with two new movies and a touring play. Reflecting on her stellar career, Didi picked out as highlights her appearance on Broadway in Pulitzer award winning play ‘Lost in Yonkers’ by Neil Simon; providing the voice of Raggedy Ann in the 1977 feature film; and of course starring as Frenchy in Grease and Grease 2.

“Nobody knew just how successful Grease would go on to be, even after more than 40 years. In effect, we made a very long music video in the days before MTV!” Didi recently attended a reunion for the film’s 40th anniversary, and keeps in touch with stars like Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing and Jamie Donnelly, another of the Pink Ladies. “Although we are all just a little older now, we still have the same young spirit we had then,” she says, pointing out that her new role as Fairy Godmother is ‘ageless’.

She is proud of her recent appearance on Dancing on Ice with professional skater Lukasz Rozycki. “He made sure I never fell over and he was just the greatest skater. It was a great experience, although I was so nervous. Learning a new routine every week made me feel good, although the ice is very hard!!! I am looking forward to starring in the pantomime on a regular stage!!”

‘Cinderella’ will be at Bridlington Spa from Friday, 13 December until Sunday, 5 January 2020. To book, go to bridspa.com, or book via the box office on 01262 678258 or in person.
