A team from East Riding of Yorkshire Council has won the Best Overall Team at this year’s Local Authority Challenge, held at the Emirates Riverside Stadium in Durham.

The day-long event requires quick-thinking, exceptional team work, decisive decision-making and good communication, with entrants playing corporate management roles in a wide-ranging scenario which involves saving a struggling council from financial and reputational disaster and producing a strategic recovery plan.

The six-strong team was captained by Yvonne Rhodes, head of business management and commissioning, and was made up of Mark Bateman, principal communications officer, Stephen Chandler, finance manager, Becky Cardwell, operations manager – waste, streets and grounds, Nuala Taylor, principal housing policy and development officer, and Michelle Braithwaite, principal procurement officer.

“It was a real team effort and everyone played their part in securing this prestigious award,” said Yvonne Rhodes - who was also presented with the Best Chief Executive Award.

“The day was really intense with a lot of information coming in all the time and strict deadlines to adhere to. It required teams to think outside the box and to also develop partnerships with the other teams in attendance in order to achieve goals and get things done.

“I am really proud with what we as a team achieved and for bringing the trophy back to the East Riding,” added Yvonne.

Team members were challenged to be bold and innovative with their approach to tackling all the challenges, with participants encouraged to produce strategic solutions to problems outside the scope of their normal roles.

The event attracted teams from Lincolnshire and Yorkshire as well as from across the North East.
