Update on the autumn COVID-19 booster programme and flu vaccines
Date
Fri, 29 Jul 2022
Description

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that everyone aged 50 and over should be offered a COVID-19 booster and a flu jab this autumn as part of wider plans to increase protection against respiratory viruses ahead of the winter.

Under the advice, those eligible for a further COVID-19 booster will be:

  • All adults aged 50 years and over
  • Those aged five to 49 years in a clinical risk group, including pregnant women
  • Those aged five to 49 years who are household contacts of individuals who are immunosuppressed
  • Those aged 16 to 49 years who are carers
  • Residents and staff in care homes for older adults
  • All frontline health and social care workers.

When will the vaccinations be offered and how can individuals get their jab?

Eligible groups are asked not to get in touch just yet - the NHS will announce when and how people will be able to book an appointment. Plans will be put in place nationally and public health will support the roll-out across the East Riding, whether this be through pop-up clinics or by GPs.

What about flu vaccines?

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has also announced it will be widening the offer of the free flu vaccine to more eligible groups in England from the autumn, including:

  • All adults aged 50 to 64 years
  • Secondary school children in Years 7, 8 and 9, who will be offered the vaccine in order of school year (starting with the youngest first).

These additional groups will only be eligible once the most vulnerable, including previously announced pre-school and primary school children, those aged 65 years and over and those in clinical risk groups, have been offered the jab.

Please note: Staff flu champions will shortly be liaising with line managers to collate free flu voucher orders for council staff not eligible for the NHS flu vaccine programme. Information will also be shared on the intranet.
